Moved here from FB. This news is too excited and I think should be captured in the forum. @Baidu: Yesterday, after collecting vast data prepared by various veterans in the entertainment business, independent research evaluation system, namely "standard ranking", announced the top 50 most influential China TV artists list for 2015 (from Jan to June). Actor Wallace Huo, based on his dramas, The Journey of Flower and The Great Protector, ranks first on the list. The artist names as shown on the list is based on the standard results of their market performances from two major platforms, namely TV screen (degree of screen watching) and new media (degree of freshness and topics discussed). ![]()

@Soniya: I will try to recap The Great Protector when I've time. I planned to do it already, but then I got caught up with TJOF. I know Wallace loves TGP, but I'm not as crazy about it as him. |

Wallace always wanted to do a series like TGP. CCTV type. He will die for such series! CCTV, time to cast handsome men in your series! He didn't want to do BBJX but I'd imagine he'd say yes if CCTV produces BBJX. Wait! Is TGP CCTV? I do know it was written by famous screenwriter. Anyway great news. I predict 2nd half of the year will continue the trend thanks to Hunan showing BOC and then of course Close Your Eyes, another highly anticipated series. Will help when HQG ends its run and then repeat like before year ends. What is his next project? Where IS he? Wallace!! Ice cream beckons!! Or is he out of Taiwan? I know Wallace loves TGP, but don't you guys find the love story similar to what happens in Jin Yong's The Smiling, Proud Wanderer? And didn't Wallace do TGP pretty soon after Swordsman so shouldn't he have noticed the similarity? In TGP, Wallace's character is from the good side (the escort agencies) and loves his younger sect sister, who falls in love with another sect brother. Their marriage fails in the end. As for Wallace, he eventually falls in love the daughter of the leader of the bad side (the brigands). In SPW, Linghu Chong loves Yue Lingshan first, but she ends up liking Lin Pingzhi. Their marriage fails in the end. Linghu Chong ends up falling in love with Ren YingYing, the daughter of the bad cult. Edited by lidge, Aug 23 2015, 01:39 AM.

IMO, the Great Protector is like a fictional documentary touching on culture (of the escort agency and weapons) brotherhood, history, integrity, sacrifice, honour, perserverance and respect. These are very abstract subjects and I don't expect it to be everyone's cup of tea. It's harder to understand these abstract subjects unless we have the interests. The romance is just a dressing to make the drama more watchable. Even when there is tragedy, the director does not dramatise it. Everything is very subtle and poignant. Wallace loves this drama very much and openly said, this drama is rare and he was grateful to the director for giving him a chance to act in this drama. He even shaved his hair before he signed the contract to show his trust and commitment. Cinematography. Simplicity is beauty. The scenery is rugged but breathtaking. I love the mountains and colours of the trees. It also reflects the ruggedness and manliness of the escort trade. The costumes are always plain and you get the occasional colour from the ladies but never too bright and loud. Music score. Until I listened to it in the still of night and on the plane without interruption (during a recent holiday) that I realise what great scores they are. The use of different instruments and tempo to play the same music composition to reflect the moment and mood. And as I listen, I told myself, I would to some day be able to listen to an actual orchestra playing the music. Fighting choreography. I am a sucker for poetry in motion and visual beauty. Although I haven't a clue what the movie Hero was all about, I was awed by the colours and artistry of the screen. The fighting scenes were absolutely stunning in The Great Protector particularly the Snow fight. Wallace may not be a good dancer but he's well coordinated because his movements look natural. Characters. Before the drama was released, Wallace said 'I am colourless' in the drama. I remember we were kind of baffled by what he meant but after watching the drama, I understood his meaning. Yes, of the three main male characters, he is the 'most boring' because he is the most predictable and stable character. The most interesting and intriguing character is Meow (sorry, I forgot the actual name). Acting. It was a great cast. The veterans were all seasoned actors. The acting was natural. This drama is not overly dramatic and is subtle in conveying the feeling and atmosphere. Last but not least, bald is beautiful. I think men hardly look good half bald in pigtails but this does not apply to Wallace! I think I can go on if I understand the drama more. |

If a series focused on escort agencies, I watched TVB's Safe Guards and I prefer it to TGP. Of course TVB can't compare to a Chinese production in terms of cinematography, music score, fighting choreography, but I still like Safe Guards more. I love everything about it, a story of internal family fight set during a time of great changes in the escort business. I agree that TGP's plot is great because it discusses the various changes that were taking place in China during that time period. Within the country, various businesses were changing and the escort business is used to symbolize that. There's also political themes, such as the influence of the West in China as can be seen with the growing use of opium. All of this is very interesting, especially for history fans of which I am a huge one. I guess what I don't like about TGP is I wish the series would move faster. This is a problem I have with Chinese series in general, some of them move like molasses! And this is from me who have no problem watching series that have hundreds of eps, as long as the pace of what I'm watching is good. I love crime series the most, but I always watch TVB and never Chinese series because it takes forever to solve one crime. In TVB, a case can be solved in 2 or 3 eps and we can quickly move onto the next one. With Chinese series, this takes forever! I remember when I watched a young Justice Bao series with Deng Chao, it took forever and by the end, I didn't care who did it anymore. I just wished it would end so I can be put out of my misery. Lidge i get your meaning abt tgp. Safe guards is one of my most fave tvb seeries ever because of the wonderful dialogue. Just found out tgp is not cctv but it has all the hallmarks of a cctv series. Most seerious drama with serious acting class A type actors are slow. Dont watch it expecting it to be fast paced. Meant to be more character development and mandarin a bit more difficult. This is the sort of acting wallace is striving for where he gets to act wth class A veterans and he himself is not the most experienced on the set. Rare chance. I will watch tgp at my own pace. I remember i watched yong zheng wang chao and the men are all old and none too handsome. As the serries weng along i find all of them rather pleasant looking. The point is the script is class A type but what made such production excellent is seriously the acting. It is like being amongst renowned classically trained actors reading a script written by shakespeare. That is what wallace wants. By the way safe guards took some pivotal scene from yzwc and bbjx is a direct copy of yzwc except made sexier so to speak. If there is any cctv series you wanna give a try and you must have the patience for it like tgp x 2 type, yzwc is a must watch. The actor playing kangxi was beyond excellent and i hope when wallace is older he becomes that sort of actor. |

I think the big movie and singing timers will still dominate the top ten. People like Fan Bing Bing, Huang XioaMing, Vicky Zhao, Andy Lau, Jay Chou, Zhang ZiYi, Yang Mi, Sun Li, Chen Dao, Lois Koo etc. Last year he had his own production, Perfect Couple of which I assume if it makes profit, he will get a share. He doesn't have any this year and actors are paid fixed amount. I am happy even if he makes it top 20. Not greedy.. so long he continues to receive great scripts for acting. The list isn't based solely on how much they made. It's a combination of wealth, media exposure, internet hits and influence. I'm expecting him to rank higher than this year's. |

It doesn't matter if Wallace doesn't have a weibo. His name is constantly one of the top celeb names being searched online. There's a ranking of celebs being searched online that's released daily. For the past couple of months, Wallace's name is always one of the top 5 because of TJOF and LMIYD. I know a few days ago, he even climbed to #1 for some reason. Lately, Hu Ge, Wallace and Wang Kai have been switching places in the top 3.

The internet hits are likely to be proportional to their dramas. The more dramas the more hits. And for some.... private gossips. The top 10 searchers on weibo automatically pops up on my screen when I log onto weibo. Fan Bing Bing is super popular. Most times, mainly gossips. Sometimes bizarre headings.
