Translated by: orion![]() He is a knight with a daring heart, reticent and remote even when we see each other in face, leaving me only in a state of dreamy melancholy. That’s my imagination before meeting Wallace Huo. However, the first thing he did to me was shake my hands, then relaxing and smiling in his seat, wait for my interview. It was more than a joy to interview Wallace. When he said that his personality changed along with the characters he played, his versatile screen images flashed in my head, and reminded me that he was much more than just Prince Melancholy. I cannot help imagining him as a cocktail with rainbow colors, a liquid with magic that can only be sipped but not swallowed. I am very sure that people can never escape the allure of this magic flavor. Getting Better as A Comedian What kind of person is Ya-Shou Lee, your character in Wu Shi Lang? He likes girls and he likes money, but he didn’t have guts. In a nutshell, he is superficial. The goal of his whole life is to marry some rich girl and live without working. Why did you want to film this comedy? This is the first time I make this kind of comedy. When you get to a certain stage, you want to try something you never did before, and now it is time for me to try something new. My roles in the past were mostly passionate or heroic, and this time I want to challenge the role of an ordinary person. (Will you put in your own funny ideas?) Sure. I had some ideas of my own when I read the script, and when the filming began, there were a lot of trials and errors, and discussion with the director, and in the end new things come out. (Do you think you have talent for comedy?) I don’t want to say that I am talented for comedy, but at least I am in that mood now. With comedy you want to make people laugh. I like to work in the atmosphere of the whole crew and don’t have too much predetermined thoughts. Miriam Yeung is quite an experienced comedian. Did you create a different kind of chemistry with her? We have a lot of fun. In my previous work there were always a lot of emotional scenes for my partners and me. This time we have buddy bonding first, and then romance. Miriam is unique. She likes laughing and acts in an ad lib style. You have to respond in the same ad lib way to catch her tone, otherwise you will be screwed up by her! (Are you beaten a lot in the TV?) Yes, totally her slave. Moreover, there was a scene where I dropped my trousers and she never wanted me to put them back on. I learn a lot from her acting style. Is there anything in common between you and your character? We both love money! Ya-Shou was a poor, miserable orphan, so there was nothing he wanted more than the money, while I have my goals and dreams. In addition to making a living, I have my own hobbies and want to make some dramas that I really like. Any hot scenes between you and Miriam? We have romance, but no bed scenes so far, and it will be really funny if there is any. (Did you get together before making this TV?) No, we figured that out when we went to the filming spot. In the beginning we did not catch each other’s tone, maybe because we came from different backgrounds and had different views on what does funny mean. But after that things went very smoothly. Be it the buddy bonding or the romance, the two roles of us are quite amazing. (This is your second time working with Guoli Zhang?) That’s right. I had always admired him since our first collaboration. (How about George Hu?) He is my rival for Miriam’s love in the TV; considerate, romantic and gentle, complete opposite of Ya-Shou! When we have free time we will chat or play basketball. How open can you be in comedy? Basically I am already quite open in this series. I have made a couple of dramas, modern or custome series, so I am not particularly nervous about my first comedy. Dressed funny is never a problem for me. (All the roles you had played are quite different from one another. Do these roles have any different impact on you?) Quite a lot. My personality changes with the role I play. I become funny as I am now making this comedy, and I was more introspective when I made my previous series. Is there any role that you will not take? So far, no. Thriller is not a problem, and how much I would expose depends on the story. In this series I had made myself ugly and ridiculous. (What kind of role do you want to try most?) I wish to play gangster. It doesn’t have to be cool. A godfather or a subordinate, anything will do, as long as the character is real and the plot tells the truth about the underworld. This is something I never try before. A Persevering Person I heard that you are persevering. What do you persevere about anyway? Things that I like. I will stay on and work my way out as long as I like the drama, no matter how difficult and exhausting it is. Same for the music. I persevere on everything that I love, including my own privacy. Your screen images had been quite melancholic. Is it also true in the real life? I may be introspective, but now I have changed a bit. I wish to know more about what other people think, and this helps my work and my acting. (Do you always think of the worst scenario beforehand?) I am more pessimistic and always think about the worst situation for anything. (What are your advantage and your pitfall?) Perseverance is my strength, and I have ambition for my career. Pitfall….. not being slick enough, I guess? I am not sure whether you can call it a pitfall, because I need to protect my privacy in this complex entertainment business. When the Love Comes What kind of girls do you like? I don’t have any criteria. All I want is that we can fit into each other’s life. Will you tell a girl that you love her? I will, I guess. (In what way?) Text message, maybe. (Why text message?) It is so embarrassing for me to speak out! Are you a romantic lover? I am more pragmatic. I will buy something that she needs, or take her out for a good dinner, but I won’t try to make things look romantic. I am not that kind of person. (Will you apologize first when you have a fight with your girlfriend?) I don’t know, to tell you the truth. Sometimes I am a bit chauvinistic. Of course what really matters is how much I love her. Postscript It was early when I arrived in the filming studio. The assistant said that Wallace was dressing, so I waited in the restaurant of the hotel where the actors stay to calm down a bit in the humid hot June of Shanghai. The sun was blazing and the air arid. I sat by the window, amazed by the surroundings: woods with a pond, black swans and elegant peacocks straddling all around. Wallace showed up in shirt and suits, fully garmented, handsome but tortured in summer. The assistant told me that Wallace had a sore throat, and I can tell from his worn out look. Yet the interview was very smooth, because of his professional attitude. Wallace liked to first squeeze his forehead when focusing on my inquiries, and then relaxed to answer in a light mood. When I was asking him of something, all of a sudden he looked out of the window and smiled like a child. There was a peacock walking near us by the window. I was told that the ultimate pleasure in the world is to chat with a handsome guy. So you can easily imagine how happy I was, when I finished the interview and departed with Wallace in his elegant gesture and melting smile. Edited by tomatoes, Jul 16 2012, 04:04 AM.
