YOHO! Cover + Interview of Nov 2006

He does not seem to belong to the show biz. Urbane and gentle, Wallace Huo is always calm and compliant before the camera, and sometimes even too shy to do a bit show-off, as all other stars do for themselves. Nevertheless, he answered every question with politeness and patience. Without urging us with a pressing attitude and a packed schedule, he sailed the interview in a pleasant and peaceful breeze towards the end.

Wallace is, however, a bit stubborn too. As a man, he does not like to be under someone else’s control and forced to do something he dislikes. Therefore he starts managing his own business. “Everything goes through my consideration before I consent to do it, including the interview we are now having at this time. I only want to do what I like to do; I feel more comfortable this way because nobody is controlling me.”

He is a loner and attends very few public events, saying those are transient and superficial. “I would rather stay at home, not telling people how famous or how rich I am. What matters is whether you are happy and satisfied at this very moment.” He said.

Everything is under extremely careful planning and supervision – Wallace’s understated, mature personality goes way beyond his age and is a huge contrast to this flamboyant business. “I am not the just-do-it kind of person. I am not making the first move unless I have thought over all the good and odds.”

Would it be too stressful? “Very stressful,” Wallace chuckled, like a small boy. He does not take offers easily until he has prepared enough for his new part in the drama. However, he never wants to play similar roles, which makes the life even tougher for him. On his young face there is no arrogant glaze of this show biz, only a complacent and persevering attitude with which Wallace works in his favorite profession, putting into it every bit of his heart and soul.

YOHO!: You just finished making Wu Shi Lan, something you never tried before?

Wallace: It is a hilarious character. Being an actor, I don’t mind breaking my usual screen image. I will be limited in my acting if I always care about whether I look good on TV. I started trying different roles since last year, and now I find comedy quite interesting. I didn’t want to do comedy in the past. It is more stressful than making romance. In romance you can touch your audience with camera and music, in addition to your acting. To make them laugh, however, requires acting from your expression and gestures. It will be very embarrassing if the audience doesn’t think you are funny.

In the beginning nobody believed that I could play such a role. I kept no reservation in my acting, however, and tried to play something that was completely opposite to what I had done in the past. This character is superficial, greedy, blatant, he likes to chase girls but has no guts. It was quite tough, but in the end it worked out great. I would give myself a score of 90 out of 100.

YOHO!: How long does it take to enter this role?

Wallace: Pretty fast, actually the second day of filming. It didn’t go well on the first day because Miriam Yeung spoke Cantonese while I spoke mandarin, and we did not know each other as well. We had to act hideously in the first scene with a lot of people around. She has always been a great comedienne and collaborated with a lot of great actors in the past. Things got better the next day, and it went quite well after that. There were sparkles between us all the time. We never rehearsed; after checking our lines briefly, we went on an ad lib acting. This business is quite interesting and helps me realize my fantasy. I am never a wild person; however, by acting I did a lot of things which I would never try in reality. It is like bringing out the devil in your heart and making my life more colorful.

YOHO!: Any funny stories?

Wallace: There is a scene on the dining table. We were still exploring since we barely knew each other. On the script we had to play tricks but I was worried that Miriam would get mad at me. However she stuffed a huge fried dumpling in my mouth, and then I played back at her. After that we went more crazy and she started stuffing rice, noodles, and anything into my mouth!

YOHO!: What’s your new drama?

Wallace: It is a fashion series by director Stanley Kwan. I am an editor-in-chief for a fashion magazine, always being cool and a bit bad boy-like.

YOHO!: A lot of people were crazy about you in At the Dolphin Bay. Is there any similarity between you and Hsiao-Kang Chung (Wallace’s role in Dolphin Bay)?

Wallace: Not much. My acting was quite unpolished when I looked back at Dolphin Bay. This character easily caught people’s eyes because he had a unique and intense personality. This drama caused such a stir in Taiwan that friends I made after that show thought I am a cool and intense person, but in fact I am gentle and mild. This character had a lot of impact on me and convinced people that I am an outrageous guy!!

YOHO!: Later you seemed to struggle even more in the movie Hands in the Hair. Was it that stressful?

Wallace: Quite stressful. First, I never played a hairdresser before and, second, I knew nothing about Shanghai culture. I was not sure whether I could make this role as an indigent young man in Shanghai. So I went to Shanghai in advance to understand people living in some old, needy community. It was stressful also because Rosamund Kwan and Francis Ng were both great stars. I think this is a precious experience for me, even though I may not have done a good job then.

YOHO!: You worked so hard for all your works?

Wallace: I did a lot of preparation beforehand. If I can’t make it, I won’t take the offer. Not a perfectionist; I think I am just being conservative to stay on the safe side. The initial phase for me is always very tough, but things work out well after the filming starts, and I can learn a lot during that time. This is again reflected in my personality. I am a typical Capricorn, not so active. After I join this business, I have tuned down my emotions. I am almost losing all those outrageous feelings and have to look very hard for them. I won’t approach someone actively even I like her. I don’t have a lot of momentum in everyday life. If I find someone that I love, I hope she can make the first move.

YOHO!: Among all your collaborating actresses, whom do you like best?

Wallace: They are all very unique persons, much more unique than my male partners. Miriam always laughs madly in the studio like a lunatic. This business is so right for her. She knows how to entertain and enjoy herself without caring how people think of her. Shu Qi is as independent as a man and she manages everything in her own hands. SunLi is completely different from her elegant screen image. She is like a mischievous boy.

YOHO!: Why did you become an actor?

Wallace: Being an actor is quite a challenge for me. I haven’t been talking about it for a while. I was meant to be a singer in the beginning but there was not a single chance. Somebody made an offer to me that I could record the soundtrack if I agreed to play the lead role in that TV drama. After that it becomes an endless business, I mean acting, and I find it is quite interesting. Now singing has instead become my leisure business.

YOHO!: Was acting difficult for you in the beginning?

Wallace: Extremely difficult. I had a romance scene with a girl in my first drama but I didn’t even know how to walk! The director went mad. I would watch how other people acted even when I didn’t have to be there that day. Just sit there and watch the whole day…. When I look back at that time, it is a necessary route you have to take, a lot of hardships and experience. I think I still have a lot to learn.

YOHO!: Did you have any goals or competitors when you first joined this business? Are the competitors different now?

Wallace: Initially there were a couple of peer competitors who joined this business around the same time. Later on I didn’t feel competing with them, because we follow different paths. I need innovations, while they stay on the same track.

YOHO!: Your favorite actor?

Wallace: There are some whom I want to take as my role model. For example, I like Tony Leung’s works. He is among the best in Asia.

YOHO!: Do you have any plan for a new album? You haven’t recorded any new song after your last album Start. What kind of album you wish it to be, if you can decide? Will you put in your own works?

Wallace: I will sing a new song for Wu Shi Lan with Miriam. It is more relaxing to sing just for fun. Making a personal album is very stressful, because I want it to be perfect. For my future projects I will choose something I really love and hope to work without too much pressure. That’s it so far. I might consider making another album, if I find music that I like and I can sing.

YOHO!: What kind of music do you like?

Wallace: Rock, more intense music, I like to put that in my next album. My favorite music changes with time.

YOHO!: How do you relieve your pressure?

Wallace: I will exercise, jogging or playing basketball, trying to empty my thoughts. It helps easing the pain, although not curing it.

YOHO!: Will you give up everything you have someday and pursue the life which you really want?

Wallace: Not now. Although there is distress and disappointment, I will try to diminish them. I am more mature now and know how to deal with them. In the past I always suffered, but now I have gone through a lot. Troubles are always around, but I learn how to downplay them.

YOHO!: Is there anyone you want to thank especially?

Wallace: Myself, perhaps. Without agency and any backup, I am totally on my own.

YOHO!: What’s the craziest thing you have done so far?

Wallace: There had been a girl that I loved. I couldn’t find her someday, so I kept running back and forth for five times, in rain.

YOHO!: How do you define youth?

Wallace: Youth is your money. Simple as it is, I do think it makes much sense.

YOHO!: Do you come to Beijing just for Kobe Bryant? How do you feel after seeing him in person?

Wallace: Great. I haven’t pursued any star after entering the show biz, but I couldn’t help taking pictures of Kobe this time.

YOHO!: Do you watch NBA in your leisure hours?

Wallace: I like basketball very much, but due to my work, I don’t watch a lot of games. I had been the forward player in high school team. Basketball is my teacher and it teaches me a lot in my life. Basketball bears unique meaning for me. It is not easy to find enough friends to play basketball after working in this business. People are so busy and cannot make it, so I can only dream that in my heart.

YOHO!: Did you watch the game in which Kobe scored 81 points?

Wallace: I watched the DVD; that’s beyond human. Chamberlain had scored 100 in the past, but now it is more difficult because the defense is hard to break, and the physical build of basketball players improves. The center position Chamberlain played was closest to the basket and thus easier to score.

YOHO!: Who is your favorite basketball star?

Wallace: Michael Jordan, as mot young people. I learned basketball by watching his games, and tried to do what he did. He is perfect. The era of Jordan has ended, and there doesn’t need to be another him. If there has to be someone for the whole NBA, I think Kobe is the one. Of course there is a lot of controversy on Kobe; people either like him or hate him, and quite a lot of people hate him. He is a superb player, but in the past he didn’t know how to work with the team. He is too strong in personal skills to put himself in a team. However he is more mature now, maybe because he had gone through a lot of hardships and begins to learn what basketball is all about.

YOHO!: Do you collect basketball shoes?

Wallace: I do, although not many. When the first few Jordan generations were around, I was still in school and had no money for them. Now I have a job and can afford them, but I couldn’t find the earlier ones. I also collect soccer shoes, sneakers, and lighters. I have more than 50 ZIPPOs and change everyday. Some are limited and classic products; for example, one that has all the World Cup years and locations on it. This is really an addicting hobby, both the lighter and the sneakers.

YOHO!: If you are the designer, how will you design your sports gear?

Wallace: All-in-one design, black and water-proof so that you can wear them in rain, plus a pocket for iPOD.
