Here is a translation of the article. Since it isn’t an interview of Wallace, but rather a promotional article organized by the production company, I only attempt to make a summary of it. Xing Ming Shi Ye – Double Sensation Dragons Small Zhenghai village is packed with variety of people and filled with murder cases. Meng Tian Chu comes from the sea aboard. His Italian culture gives him a sense of romance plus new knowledge of case solving techniques. Duan Ping is born and raised locally, detailed oriented and has a good manner. Although he doesn’t have MTC’s practical experience, but small details in the crime scenes can’t escape his sharp eyes. The story is based on an internet novel with 6 million viewership rates. As compared to the novel, the drama gives a more dramatic effect and is therefore more eye-catching. New setting As compared with other crime related series in ancient periods, SMSY is a completely new set-up. Technically speaking shi ye isn’t a government officer. Shi ye is engaged by the government officers to help them to resolve crime cases, whereas in ancient period dramas normally cases are resolved by the government officers themselves. In addition, this MTC’s role is new in ancient dramas. His cultural background is a key difference. For example, he has tried his hardest to get attention from Xiao Feng Yi by climbing up the roof to see her and draws her a big picture. XFY has two marriage engagements. A legend of a stranger in the Ming dynasty The two male leads are quite extreme - one wearing strange clothes with knowledge of scientific techniques and one who is an elite and is more serious. These two persons meet at a point of time and become friends. This is a relaxed story. A legendary story which is logically reasonable and it won’t challenge viewers’ bottom line. Suspense and intensive Since this is a suspense story, there are many cases in between. Based on the producer, there are more than 10 cases in 30 something episodes. These cases require MTC and DP to resolve them. While solving these cases, the two male leads themselves also have a mysterious past for them to explore the truth. Interview with director Yuan Xiao Man DP is a traditional person, who is serious and good at logical thinking. Wallace himself is a quiet person, who likes to stay at home watching videos. He said he likes the MTC’s character very much, which is completely different from his own personality. After 10 episodes he will get rid of his Italian costumes and is fully absorbed into the Ming dynasty. But still his is different from the real Ming people. This is a non-traditional series with two male leads and one female lead. I didn’t speak with Wallace and Nicky before the set started. Only once with Nicky after the set had started. Particularly for detective stories if too much are addressed the audiences would find it boring. But too less they would be confused. We did a lot of cutting to make the series more intense. Complicated cases and entangled love affairs – the male leads deploy their specialties in cases solving. MTC will do a lot of medical diagnosis techniques. He has a tool kit. Some cases are closed in about 2 episodes. We use blue as the background color. There are lots of background music and some drums are added. DP is a professional shi ye. He is experienced and has good logical thinking. He is a good example as compared to MTC, who is lousy and carefree. After seeing DP’s detective work, MTC also wants to become a shi ye. The two are friends as well as enemies when it comes to solving cases. They also compete for the same girl. Interview with Nicky Wu DP has a strong foundation as a shi ye. He is a traditional Chinese and therefore has a lot of conflicts with MTC, who is more lively and carefree. DP uses a lot of eye contacts. Because the scenes are filmed jumping around, I used to talk a lot to the air, mentioning names of characters I didn’t even see before. This series is mainly about crime cases, love scenes are minimal. The three of us are together most of the time in this series. It’s a difficult choice for XFY between DP and MTC. However, I think DP and MTC should be one pair. We looked at each other quite a lot as a sense of compromise and understanding, haha. Interview with Wallace Huo MTC is a funny character. After reading the script I asked the stylists to design the costumes for me. It might look like Caribbean style but you would understand why after watching the series. I also used an earring, which I bought from the street. This earring represents MTC. At first we designed that MTC would leave behind a letter as well as this earring to XFY and DP, but gave up because of too much work. I didn’t read the original novel because the script had made a lot of changes. From the beginning MTC is not convinced by DP. After more understanding he actually admires him. It’s quite funny. We had many discussions about whether we should change the characters to suit the cases but later we decided to change the cases to suit the characters. I emphasize more on the character. I believe a character should not be deteriorated from its original design. Long ge (Nicky) is strong in making the cases logical and so we discussed together as to how to harmonize the cases and the characters. Basically we share work among the three of us (including the director). Generally for detective cases they are easy to express in words but harder on screen. MTC uses many romantic ways to pursue the girl. But too much on the script and so I asked to delete some so that we could emphasize more on the cases. (asked by the reporter – in the original script MTC should have many wives). Yes, I heard that. But this MTC is so pity that he doesn’t have any. If I knew it better I wouldn’t take up this series, haha. But the director finally gave him a good female friend, who is the boss of a winery – Zuo Jia Yin. There is a love triangle in the series. We tried not to make it vulgar. Also, we tried to protect the female lead. We cut those scenes of her not being lovely. Not making her being hated by other people for going between two men. We actually tried to protect this series, like protecting a child. Hopefully we won’t get blames from the audiences. I am seldom so happy while filming, mainly because we have a good team respecting each other. You know we compete with times while filming. And because of this we start not respecting each other. Privately we have good relationship with the crew and artistes. We are honest and personalized. Frankly speaking, I seldom talk so much. If I didn’t have a happy time I wouldn’t have said so much. I talk a lot when I’m happy. Our director is a good man. I call him Man ge (brother). He is a real brother. He asked for our suggestions while filming. I believe if we have a good crew, even the audiences could feel it when watching the series. We really hope this series has a good outcome when it is out. Nicky is good to us. He cooked hotpot when it was cold. I felt warm inside. I really don’t know more to say. Everyone was closed and good at each other. TV Series is substantially different from the novel Duan Ping is a new makeup character as well as making Meng Tian Chu a returnee from overseas. The original novel is a time travel story. This new story is more dramatic with two male leads – with characteristics of one Chinese and one Westerner. In the novel MTC should have many wives, including a princess who fell for him. But in the series MTC didn’t have any girls chasing him, instead he chased a particular girl who didn’t like him at first. Xing Ming Shi Ye is based on an internet novel with 6 million views. Sheng Da has planned to make a series of products (such as video games) for XMSY. They will also produce MV for the theme songs. They have obtained copy rights for this XMSY brand. My pleasure! Similar to creating fanarts I found that doing translation can only be achieved out of love. When I translated this I almost gave up until I got to Wallace's part, which got me excited, LOL. PS I didn't read the whole article before the translation. I just read along the translation and didn't know there was an interview with Wallace there, LOL. |

Right!! I'd been wanting to say this to you: being creative isn't only about creating something obviously 'artsy' like posters, videos or whatever... I've noticed that you've been creating this great network out of love for Wallace... youtube, spcnet, this website etc... Now, that's really creative, you should realise that! I really admire and wanna thank you for all that! And indeed, excitement is a great part of that, hahaha! Good thing you didn't give up...

Wow...thanks tobemela! I was having a lot of trouble reading it, lol. Such an inspiring speech bombonella, but I absolutely agree! The work you've put into this site, youtube, and the spcnet forum is a lot! Without people like you, the "artsy" stuff wouldn't/couldn't be created!! |

I actually quite enjoy the fun of creating stuff, although get frustrated sometimes. For instance, creating this site did take up lots of time and energy. I'm not very good at coding stuff. However, now I know a bit of CSS, html and javascript etc. Even with the help of the site's experts, there were lots of tried and error during the process. Next I will add a blog to the site. The blog can talk about just anything, such as the start of a poll etc. Does anyone interest in updating the blog? |
